August 2025 - District V

Welcome back everyone! There is a lot going on this month because summer is in full swing! Joe Nall Week, in Woodruff, South Carolina, was great, if a bit muddy and soggy. It didn’t dampen the spirits too much, and at the end of the week, things dried out.

We had a good turnout for the presentation that AMA Executive Director Tyler Dobbs gave in the Robert Shaw Learning Center and an even better turnout for the AMA Membership Meeting in the hangar. (Club note:feeding people boosts turnout!) A total of 1,250 pilots and hundreds or more spectators and families attended!

A shoutout goes to the Bartow County Model Aviation (BCMA) club in North Georgia. BCMA, in partnership with the Woodland Middle School, brought the love of aviation to a group of eighth grade students through STEM outreach.

Working one or two days a week, they built two trainer kits (not ARFs): a Great Planes PT-40 and a PT-60, which were donated by the club. At the end of the school year, the kids were hosted at the club field for a day of flying not only the airplanes that they built, and other trainers were on hand so everyone got a fair amount of stick time.

The club utilized a $1,000 AMA Take off And Grow (TAG) grant to help fund the project, which included club members going to the school once a week to advise on construction and finishing techniques, radio setup, and finally flying.

Ninety students participated in the STEM collaborative effort and I tip my cap to BCMA!

Until next month, stay safe.
