District VII members are out flying now, but we sure had extreme weather. Parts of the district had warm weather that was almost summerlike, while other parts had record snowfall. Wausau and Green Bay, Wisconsin, had incredible snowfalls, as did Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. When the snow is higher than the first floor of your house, there’s only one thing to do—build and prepare for the flying season.
District VII was busy throughout the winter, and I want to pass on some of the activities that were sent in, so I am turning it over to our district members. First up is the Green Bay Model Airplane Club, presented by Terry Dunn.
The Green Bay Model Airplane Club (gbmac.com) in Wisconsin has been hosting a group build over the winter months. Thirteen members signed up to build kits of the Messerschmitt Bf 109E from 13th Squadron (13thsquadron.com). This foam board model is unique. It has a perfectly correct scale profile and many interesting features.
Most of the participating members had never built a foam board model before, and some had never built a model of any kind before. Everyone has caught on quickly and the models are incredible. We are all enjoying the opportunity to hang out together while we share techniques and ideas.
After four sessions, one model is ready to fly, and most are 75% complete. There are a few stragglers as well. That is okay because they have a little time to catch up before flying weather returns to Wisconsin. We are planning to choose a spring day for everyone to maiden their new Bf 109s at our flying field. It will be a fun event!
A couple of clubs also sent in notices about upcoming events. John Biondo, of the Lone Tree Flyers in Iowa, shared news of the club’s upcoming event.
Across the farmland of eastern Iowa, near the small town of Lone Tree, the sound of large model aircraft engines and turbines will once again echo across the sky. On June 12-13, the Lone Tree Flyers RC club will host its 5th Annual Fun Fly, welcoming pilots and spectators from across the region to one of the Midwest’s most picturesque flying sites. The surrounding farmland provides wide open airspace and unobstructed horizons—ideal conditions for large-scale RC flight.
The flightline offers spectators and fellow pilots a constant variety of airplanes and flying styles. Visitors can expect to see Scale warbirds, classic biplanes, and more. The Lone Tree Flyers Fun Fly promises an unforgettable weekend.

Thanks, John, for the update. The Lone Tree Flyers club has a beautiful field, and I know this will be a major event. I hope to see you there.
Many of you know that we lost Hazel Sig-Hester in October 2025. Being such an icon in the modeling industry, the Marshalltown RC Flyers in Marshalltown, Iowa, has decided to host a fun-fly in Hazel’s honor.
The Hazel Sig-Hester Memorial Fun-Fly will be held August 8-9. Having seen photos of the Huckfest that the Marshalltown club hosts, I am sure that this will be a magnificent event and a true honor to the legacy of Hazel Sig. I am going to attend this one and will build a Sig airplane just for it. Which one? You’ll have to attend to find out! Event details can be found at facebook.com/groups/MarshalltownRCFlyers.
