South Dakota Associate Vice President Arend Schuurman covered the Brookings Aeromates’ annual First of Summer Fun Fly held on the last weekend in May in Brookings, South Dakota.
There was nice weather and a good turnout for this year’s event. We had 25 registered fliers from across the area. Grillmaster Greg Moir served pork loin sandwiches, burgers, and hotdogs.
You might enjoy this picture of Jerry Robbins’ newest creation. He built this airplane this past winter after designing it in Fusion 360 and cutting it out on his CNC router. It is built from two 1-inch-thick pieces of white Styrofoam with lots of interior bracing. He fiberglassed the exterior then applied vinyl auto wrap for the color. It measures 90 inches across and is adequately powered by a DLE-120 engine. While he was at the building board, he also added a tow release and bomb bay for candy or parachuters. It flies great. Jerry flew it several times during the weekend.
Following the yellow color scheme, I put in some more time on my old, dependable Telemaster. They always said in the advertisements that "Nothing flies like a Telemaster." I would agree.
Ken Monblatt reported on the Arvada Associated Modelers’ Jets Over the Rockies event in Arvada, Colorado.
The second annual Jets Over the Rockies is in the books. We had more than 50 pilots from eight different states and more than 400 flights. We also included our annual open house with this event, so we had roughly 100 spectators from the local area as well. We had our share of poor weather, but it didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits—pun intended.
There are lots of people and sponsors to thank, but I want to make sure that Jeff Leasure’s videos are on the top of the list. He was there all three days and shot some great flying and people having fun. Please check out Jeff’s YouTube page at Jeff’s RC Clips: www.youtube.com/@jeffsrcclips.
