This is a great use of an AMA Foundation grant. These details are from Longmont Electric Aircraft Flyers President Mark Faivre.
Our club, number 4648, the Longmont Electric Aircraft Flyers (LEAF), held an introductory flying event for a local Cub Scout group. Some of our grant money is used to host introductory flights during the spring and summer months. This year, we also organized a special event for one of our local Cub Scout groups.
It was a first-time flight for many of the Scouts, and they all had a great time flying and watching other aircraft fly. We had five instructors who were available to help, and each Scout participated in several flights on our club-owned AeroScout and Apprentice training aircraft. Several of the parents also enjoyed some flying for the first time.
An unexpected bonus occurred when we were asked whether the Girl Scouts could also give it a try—to which we said, "Of course." We had about a dozen Scouts flying throughout the day. Many had several flights.
Camilo Pinedaour, our Cub Scout contact, sent this message:
"We really appreciate all the hands-on learning you provided—getting to actually fly the RC planes was such an incredible experience for everyone. You all made it so much fun and so approachable for them."
Wyoming Associate Vice President Craig Bastian reports on the Casper Airmodelers’ Annual R/C Fly-In.
We gathered once again for our traditional fun-fly in July at our longtime field in Casper, Wyoming. The four-day event drew 28 registered pilots from Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, and Colorado.
Friday and Saturday, the wind was a little mean, but there was still good flying. Saturday was the busiest of the four days, with flying, food, raffles, contests, pilots’ drawings, awards, and swap meet bargaining. Along with the daytime flying, lights were provided, and night-flying was also a part of the fun.
